Chapter 14:News Releases, Media Alerts, and Pitch Letters

As you can see, this chapter is regarding news releases, media alerts and pitch letters. This information comes from the book Public Relations: Strategies and Tactics. Here were three things I pulled from the chapter that I found to be very important for pr professionals and students to know.

1.)News Releases should be written in the inverted pyramid format. This means that the first paragraph summarizes the most important part of the story and the following paragraphs become less and less important information simply filling in the gaps so to speak.

2.)The composition of publicity photos are very important. In the chapter, three tips are suggested for this element: 1.tight shots with a minimum background, 2. an emphasis on detail, not whole scenes, and 3.) limited wasted space by reducing gaps between individuals or objects.

3.)The basic elements of a media kit/press kit are also given in this chapter they include: main news release, news feature about the development of the product, fact sheet on the product, background information, photos and drawings with captions, biographical material on spokespersons or CEO’s,and some basic brochures.
