Social Media for THAT?!?!

Here is a cool article from PRweek US. You have to quickly subscribe to read the article but it’s quick and easy and totally worth it. This article discusses an airline that is turning to social media after volcanic ash crisis. This has be asking the question, what does social media not work for?

The Anatomy of a Press Conference

If you plan to go into PR, it’s a safe bet to plan on holding a press conference. I haven’t had much guidance in this area of PR and zero experience, so I assumed some of you PR majors are in the same boat.

Here is a video I found on Conversations in Public Relations where SNM’s associate of director of public relations discusses the basics of holding a press conference. I found it very helpful and I hope you all do too!

For some reason I can’t embed the video, but just click here to watch!

Reading Notes Week 14:Chapter 11 & 12-More Social Tools & Pulling it All Together

Chapter 11 More Social Tools

1. Social Calendars– convenient and easy way to showcase your upcoming events

2.Social Pages– these are pages about a specific topic rather than yourself. i.e. “how to” pages

3.Wikis– a collaborative website where anyone can add information and change it. i.e. Wikipedia

4.Social Search Portals– this is a search tool for your visitors right on your blog

5.Virtual Worlds– this tool is not for everyone and you should test it out before integrating it. There are some advantageous aspects of virtual worlds such as starting a virtual book club.

Chapter 12 Putting it All Together

Your site is optimized if:
1. Users can interact with the content
2. Visitors can share content easily with others
3. It encourages collaboration

Here is a sample collaboration plan from A Survival Guide to Social Media
1.Feed your blog into all your social accounts
2.Feed your images from Flickr into all your social accounts
3.Feed your video clips from YouTube into all your social accounts
4.Use streamlining tools such as Ping.fm

Ask these questions of the tools you are considering:
-can you feed and display in your blog
-does it allow you to embed your videos
-do blogging platforms had plugins that allow you to run this application

YouTube PR Channels

While browsing on PR Openmic today, I came across yet another amazing feature of this site, videos! And, more specifically, YouTube PR channels!

After you sign into PR Open mic, click the video button and then click YouTube PR channels. Next simply click the link that reads, channels devoted to public relations, and you are sent here! Here you will find a rather long list of YouTube channels devoted entirely to PR.

My favorite so far is the Edelman Public Relations channel. Another cool channel is Conversations in Public Relations which gives great insight into PR, marketing, and advertsing.

This is a great asset and I hope you all check it out. If I haven’t praised PR Openmic enough, well I love you!

Reading Notes Week 13:Chapter 10-“Social Media Newsrooms”

Chapter 10:Social Media Newsrooms

In a social media newsroom(SMNR) you can:
-view all major media coverage
-look up past and future events
-see all your past and present press releases
-link to all the places you are present in the social web
-download multimedia material
-view bios on key people in the company

You need a social media newsroom if:
-tend to get or want to get a lot of media coverage
-you put out press releases on a regular basis
-if you want to tell the media that you are making an effort to make their jobs easier
-you want a place a place for blogging and to have a more traditional place to present other info

What sections should I include in my newsroom:
-Media Coverage
-News Releases
-Events
-Book Reviews
-Social Media
-Multimedia
-Team or Author
